Employers Who Give Good Benefits Get Great Employees



When was the last time you saw a doctor? When was the last time you saw a dentist? When was the last time you got new glasses?

Now - When was the last time you needed to see any of these people? Is it possible you needed to see them but didn't because you didn't have the money or insurance?

Most employers' insurance plans pay 80% of the cost to go to a doctor and many, the same towards blood tests, x-rays and some types of physical therapy. You, the employee, pay the other 20% of any medical bills. The usual cost of this basic plan is $5 - $8 a week, which is taken out of your paycheck.

When you think about what these services cost without such a plan, it's easy to see how much of a benefit they really are.

Most companies also have dental and optical benefits. The types of services covered by these plans differ from company to company. These benefits will cost more, but again, it's far less than what it costs you without.

"Maternity Leave" is more often than not a basic benefit. This means a female employee can leave her position for a certain amount of time, (usually 6 weeks), get a certain amount of her regular pay and return to work without loss of her position or rate of pay.

Beyond the basics ... We're hearing more and more about companies that have "Paternity Leave". This is usually the same as 'Maternity Leave" except it applies to fathers.

Today, a growing number of companies have plans to cover the more unusual needs of employees. It's called "Family Leave". You will take a legal leave of absence. For example, if you need to take time off to get a more intensive type of therapy or to take care of a family member.

This means you can leave your work position for a certain amount of time, get a certain amount of your regular pay and be able to return to work without losing your position or rate of pay.

Many companies today have drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

Who gets what when? In today's work world, unless you're in a management position, it's common for employers to hold off giving employees benefits until they have worked with them for a certain period of time. This can be after the first 90 days. Often it isn't until after 6 months.

Some employers limit benefits to only those people working full-time. Many employers only hire people to work part-time. And these part-time employees will not receive benefits, no matter how long they work with the same employer.

This is not the best news for employees ... But anyone can understand why business is done this way.

Let's say you're an employer and you hire a new employee and give them benefits right away. What do you think happens if/when that employee decides to leave you or needs to be let go?

It's already cost you a good deal of time, energy and money, (in the paperwork alone), to give these benefits to the employee. Now you need to spend another good deal of time, energy and money to undo these benefits. And - most benefits cover employees for at least 30 days after they've left their position, so add this to what it's already cost you. Now you can see why business is done this way.

For the "special" benefits, employees will need to have been with the company for a certain amount of time, which is usually at least a year. And they will need to have very good records of work experience and history.

How to get the best benefits ... RESEARCH.

Make good use of your local library. Look at all of the information offered on the Internet. Talk with your friends and family.

Learn everything you can about what kinds of Health Care benefits are currently being offered and "demanded" in today's work world. Only then can you make a smart choice when Choosing the Right Employer.

Find out what benefits are offered by your prospective employer. When you know what's possible you'll be in a better position to work things out with them.

Ask for what you want. Be thankful to get what you need.

Bottom line ... There can be no denying, with the high costs of medical, dental and optical care, getting good Health Care benefits are as important as getting a good paycheck.

Do everything you can to get everything you can from an employer - up front. Then get it in writing!
