Unions were created to protect workers. To unite them and give them a powerful cohesive voice when confronting the powers of owners and management. To ensure that workers would have some say on company policies regarding wages, benefits and the particulars of positions.

There can be no denying that unions have become quite a powerful force in the work world. There also can be no denying that unions continue to be an aspect about which there is a great deal of debate.

What people believe

The general belief about unions is that while they're very good.

In the ways they protect and preserve people's work positions, benefits and wages.

But - They have been known to abuse their position and power. Thus creating not so good beliefs.

Giving to get

Many companies have well-established unions in their workplace that a prospective employee must join.

This usually means paying a fee that is automatically taken out of an employee's paycheck and going to meetings.

It can also mean if there's a dispute between management and the union, an employee can be "laid off" until the dispute is settled.

Companies without unions

Many companies don't have unions and that's the way they desire it stay.

Without unions, companies are able to make decisions without the agreement of workers.

This can set up an attitude and approach that employees can either like it or leave it, (their work). Which can cost companies some employees.

But many employees prefer it this way themselves. Then, if they don't like what a particular company does, they can leave it and find another work position.

Limits

There are many workers who don't want to join unions. Despite any of the up sides.

One down side is -

When you're in a union and you're laid off, you'll lose money. And if you try to get work somewhere else, other employers won't want to hire you. Because they know it'll be a waste of their time, energy and money. Because you'll just leave them when the lay off is over.

Another down side is -

Workers will only be dealing with another power structure - the union management. This structure is supposed to represent and protect them. But some believe they won't be honestly represented and they're better off fending for themselves.

Bottom line ...

Whatever your experience and/or beliefs about unions, know that they are a force with which to be reckoned. And one that's not likely to go away.

Do all you can to educate yourself about them. This will help you make an informed choice if you apply for a position that does require you to join a union.
