The strongest drive of any living being is that of survival. For the human being, there are the basic needs to have food, shelter and clothing. This creates the need to find a way to get these things.
For most people in most of the world, that means money. So the first thing an employee seeks is money. How much money depends upon what their individual living expenses are.
A person just entering the workforce for the first time can be someone who is going to high school. Usually their reason for entering the work world is they need money to buy clothes, pay for dates or buy a car. Because they're going to school, and because of their age, they'll be looking for a part-time position that pays minimum wage or better.
A person just entering the workforce for the first time can be someone who is going to college or university. Their reason for entering the work world is they need money to pay for tuition, supplies, clothes, dates or a car. Because they're going to school, they'll be looking for a part-time position that pays minimum wage or better.
A person just entering the workforce for the first time can be someone who has been working at home running the household or taking care of a child. Their reason for entering the work world can be a need to supplement their spouse's income or because the child is grown and on their own and they desire to do something with their time and energy that's productive.
A person in this position will have very little demands in the way of hours or wages. They'll be looking for a part or full-time position that pays minimum wage or better.
A person who is on their own can have more demands of a work position. They need to pay for their own food, shelter and clothing. They need to be earning a living.
This means they need to be working a full-time position, earning the best wages they can. They need a work position that gives them the chance to advance their position and income. They need health care and other benefits. They need a chance to create a secure future.
A person who is responsible for other people has all of these needs - Multiplied!
The hopes, dreams and desires of people are the same as they always have been.
Employees are people first. What they seek is not all that different from what you or any other person seeks, just as a person.
All people desire to believe what they do serves a purpose ... Is of importance ... And plays a part in creating a positive future. For themselves and others. All people desire respect.
No matter why a person needs to work, even if a person only needs to work part-time, these are aspects they will want, (and need), to make them stay in that position.
This is when and where your workplace conditions come into play. And how you, as an employer, can limit the amount of "turnover" you experience in your business. "Turnover" means how many and how often employees leave your company/business.
Think about what you want and need from your work position.
Now make sure you give it to your employees!
One of the best ways you can do this is to be honest with your employees. Treat them with the same respect you desire. Show them you trust them.
Share with them all you can about how and why your business was started. Tell them what others think of the company/business in both the work world and the community. Tell them how the company or business plans to do even better in the future. And most importantly, tell your employees how important their positions are to achieving this success!
When employees understand how important their positions are to the company/business, they'll take pride in their positions.
When they can believe they're an important part of making the business a success, they'll have that sense of respect they desire. They'll care about their work positions.
This can only make workplace conditions better for them, you and other employees. And this can only improve your business.
